Eco-friendly travel: how to reduce your carbon footprint

Some time ago, I made the decision to travel in a more eco-friendly manner. After spending years exploring the world without much concern for my carbon footprint, I realized it was time for me to rethink my way of traveling. I remember that foggy morning in Copenhagen, drinking my coffee while reading an article about the environmental impact of tourism. This realization changed my perspective and my approach to travel.

1. Choose less polluting transport

During a trip to Europe, I decided to prioritize the train, an often underestimated option. Not only did I reduce my carbon footprint, but I also discovered beautiful landscapes that I would have missed by plane. These train journeys allowed me to slow down, reflect on my habits, and truly appreciate the journey.

2. Stay in sustainable accommodations

During my travels, I was particularly charmed by some small lodges that had adopted sustainable practices. One summer, while visiting Portugal, I discovered a lovely eco-lodge powered by solar energy. The owners had also installed a rainwater collection system. This stay allowed me to talk with locals and understand the importance of integrating local communities into a sustainable tourism perspective.

3. Reduce plastic waste

One of the biggest transformations in my life as a traveler has been learning to travel without plastic. A significant experience was my journey in Southeast Asia, where plastic waste is unfortunately everywhere. I adopted durable items like a reusable water bottle and a metal straw, which made me aware of the importance of small individual actions to contribute to a cleaner environment.

4. Participate in eco-friendly activities

An example that comes to mind is my participation in a guided hike in the national parks of New Zealand, where there was a strong emphasis on respecting and preserving the local flora and fauna. I learned so much about the fragility of ecosystems and how tourism, if well-managed, can help in their preservation.

💡 My personal tip : Before you leave, take the time to inform yourself about the destination and its sustainable practices. Not only will you discover tips to reduce your carbon footprint, but you will experience much more enriching and environmentally friendly experiences.

My journey towards sustainable tourism is still long, but every little step counts. Adopting more responsible habits has not only reduced my carbon footprint but has also given me a new perspective on the world. I invite you to embark on this beautiful adventure as well and explore the world while respecting the planet and its inhabitants. Eco-friendly travel means discovering while preserving.
