Family travels are always a beautiful adventure, aren’t they? Recently, I decided to discover some of the cities in Europe that are perfect for car-free trips. As a mom of two active children, I really enjoyed these destinations where walking reigns and where one can fully savor the charms of each place. Here’s my feedback on three European cities that I find ideal for walking getaways.

1. Amsterdam

Last year, we took a trip to Amsterdam, and I must say that this city turned out to be a paradise for families. With its picturesque network of canals and numerous bike paths, Amsterdam breathes tranquility. My children loved strolling along the canals and watching the colorful houseboats. We also had a lot of fun exploring Vondelpark, a beautiful green space in the heart of the city. One afternoon, we stopped for an impromptu picnic, and the kids had fun feeding the ducks.

2. Venice

Venice is undoubtedly the quintessential pedestrian city. Our family strolls through the winding alleys and charming squares transported us to another time. The children were fascinated by the idea of traveling by vaporetto – a mode of transport so different from anything they knew. Getting lost in the maze of Venice turned out to be extraordinary, and I have an unforgettable memory of our passage over the Rialto Bridge where my children could observe the gondolas navigating below.

3. Dubrovnik

Our trip to Dubrovnik was a surprising discovery. This fortified city, with its cobblestone streets and impressive walls, is made to be explored on foot. We climbed to the top of the ramparts with the children, who were fascinated by the breathtaking views of the orange rooftops and the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Every evening, we enjoyed walking along Stradun, the main street, where history and friendliness mingle. The city offers so many nooks to discover, perfect for an impromptu treasure hunt with the little ones.

💡 My personal tip : Don’t rush during these visits. Take the time to slow down your pace and let yourself be carried away by the unique atmosphere of each of these cities. This not only helps reduce stress but also allows you to truly enjoy every moment spent with your children.

The pedestrian cities of Europe offer a unique travel experience, stress-free and rich in unexpected discoveries. Every time I return from these getaways, I feel revitalized and closer to my children. So, if you have the opportunity, I warmly invite you to leave the car behind and explore these wonders at your own pace. After all, it is through our steps, hand in hand with our little ones, that we write the most precious memories.
