Iceland: How to Explore the Natural Wonders Without Breaking the Bank
Iceland has always been on my wish list, a dream destination with its landscapes straight out of a fairy tale. Yet, the image of an expensive country held me back. Then one day, I decided to take the plunge and prove that one could explore these natural wonders without breaking the bank.
1. Enjoying the Northern Lights for free
I remember my first night in Iceland, posted in the freezing cold, eyes fixated on the sky. Watching the Northern Lights is a bit like entering a magical world. To avoid costs, I chose favorable spots, away from the city lights, and simply waited. My tip: prefer the winter months to maximize your chances of witnessing this incredible spectacle.
2. Hiking between waterfalls and geysers
Hiking in Iceland is a true feast for the eyes and, above all, requires no budget. I laced up my best sneakers to explore Iceland's waterfalls, like Gullfoss and Skógafoss, and admire the geysers powerfully erupting from the ground. No entrance fees, just nature as far as the eye can see. Trekking enthusiasts, prepare your backpacks and set off on an adventure!
3. Camping freely
One of my best memories in Iceland remains the night under the tent, cradled by the sound of a nearby river. Wild camping, still allowed in some remote areas, helps reduce accommodation costs while providing total immersion. Don’t forget to respect local rules to preserve this exceptional natural setting.
4. Eating smart
Eating in Iceland can quickly drive up the budget, but I discovered a few tips to save. Street stands offer tasty and affordable local options, while local supermarkets allow you to prepare an improvised picnic to enjoy against breathtaking backdrops.
Iceland showed me that you can fully enjoy it on a small budget. Every moment spent there amazed me, from the bright skies to the bubbling rivers. So, embrace the beauty of this country by experiencing it simply and fully. Who knows, maybe one day, your hiking shoes will lead you there too!
