Avoiding Tourist Scams: Reflexes to Adopt

There is nothing more exciting than getting lost in an unfamiliar metropolis. However, some of my urban adventures have been marred by a common plague among many travelers: tourist scams. After a few mishaps, I developed reflexes to avoid them, and here are my tips for navigating big cities while keeping a grip on your wallet.

1. Avoid unofficial taxis

Upon my arrival in Bangkok, exhausted after a long flight, I was tempted to take the first taxi I saw as I exited the airport. Unfortunately, it was an unofficial taxi that charged me three times the normal fare for a ride to the city center. Since then, I always opt for metered taxis or local public transport, which not only saves me money but also allows me to see the city from a different perspective.

2. Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true

I will always remember that time when, in Rome, a friendly stranger offered me skip-the-line tickets to the Colosseum at an unbeatable price. I learned the hard way that these tickets were fake. To avoid such disillusionment, purchase your tickets only from official places or online, and be cautious of overly attractive discounts.

3. Double-check the bill

During an evening in Barcelona, my friends and I finished our dinner at a local restaurant. When the bill arrived, it contained errors. Given our fatigue, we could have overlooked it if we hadn't taken the time to verify it. Often, "mistakes" slip onto the bills of tourists, and a simple mental calculation can keep you from paying more than you should.

4. Inquire about local practices

In Istanbul, I nearly fell for a "friend" who wanted to take me to a tea house. Knowing an old scam, I declined, only to later find out that it was a common ploy to empty tourists' wallets. Take the time to read about local scams before you leave, so you know what to be wary of and how to avoid it.

💡 My personal tip : Always maintain a vigilant attitude. Trust your intuition and don't hesitate to say no if a situation seems odd. A simple "no, thank you" can save your travel budget.

Ultimately, traveling is an opportunity for learning and discovery. While tourist scams are common, they should not ruin your urban experience. With these tips in mind, you can explore cities with confidence and enthusiasm. So, put on your sneakers and set out to conquer the metropolises, keeping these reflexes in mind to avoid pitfalls and ensure your safety while traveling.
