How to Properly Prepare for Hiking Abroad
I have always had a fascination for the imposing mountains and winding trails of distant lands. Nothing compares to the thrill of hiking abroad and the memories it leaves behind. I still remember my breathtaking trek through the Peruvian Andes. Between short breaths and a blissful smile, I understood the importance of good preparation. That's why I’m going to share my tips for properly preparing a hike abroad.
1. Choose the right destination
The first thing to do is to choose the destination of your dreams. My choice for Peru came after seeing a thousand and one photos of snow-capped peaks. But be careful, you also need to consider your physical level and the weather conditions. For example, Iceland in summer offers breathtaking landscapes but also some weather whims that are not to be underestimated!
2. Learn about local regulations
Each country has its own rules regarding hiking. In Bolivia, for example, some treks require a local guide. I found myself in a funny situation in Nepal, where I discovered on-site that proof of insurance was mandatory to undertake the Annapurna circuit. Moral of the story: make sure to gather information well in advance to avoid this kind of unpleasant surprise!
3. Equipment: the essentials of hiking
Ah, hiking equipment: my passion (or my nightmare, depending on the morning). Having the right gear can turn a difficult hike into a pleasant adventure. My hiking shoes were my best allies during my trek across the Sahara Desert. Also, think about clothes suitable for the weather conditions, a good water bottle, and, of course, don’t forget your first aid kit. It’s better to have a bandage on hand when the infernal blister strikes unexpectedly!
4. Physical and mental preparation
Embarking on a hike abroad requires more than just a leap onto the plane. Once, I underestimated a climb in the Italian Dolomites, thinking that my Sunday strolls would suffice as training. Well, I was out of breath long before reaching the summit. The experience taught me to prepare physically but also mentally to face the altitude, long walks, and total disorientation. Regular exercise and gradual outings will get you in shape.
Hiking abroad is an experience to be savored from start to finish. Every pass crossed and every valley traversed tells its own story. Prepare yourself, let yourself be carried away, and venture into the wild nature in all its forms. You will return transformed, with another medal added to your collection of life adventures.
